Men Undressed, photographs by Mark Beehre, is an exploration of the ‘naked portrait’. Artists and photographers have long drawn a distinction between a ‘portrait’, a representation of a particular individual, and a ‘nude’ that presents an aesthetic or erotic ideal. Somewhere between the two sits the ‘naked portrait’. The intention here is to preserve, rather than efface, the specific identity of the person depicted, while removing the ‘façade, persona and signs’ that clothing usually provides.
